Hey Catherine and Joseph! You guys did awesome! When little Brenden was born (at UofU hospital) I had trouble with my nurse clamping the cord too quick, but we reminded her of our preferences and she unclamped it. She did remember to wait until I felt the weight of the placenta and was ready to push it out myself after I nursed Brenden. So some good, some bad experiences like you guys. I'm just so greatful things worked out the way they did, not having to get a c-section and all. Good luck getting rest and hope you recoup quick. Don't forget those Kegels! :)

Catherine,

Got your postcard! Congratulations! Good for you two. I thought my kind were a dying breed. I had Jeremy (a nightmare birth where the resident pulled the cord and the placenta exploded inside me) and Steysi in hospitals. Kellen and Joshua were both born at home with midwives both had slight complications which were really nothing in the hands of those skilled women.

I spent time in the late 70's and early 80's at protests and pro home-birth rallies so women would have the option. At that time doctors who supported midwives were being put in jail (where we lived in Southern CA.)

Now I hear young women talk about their births and their "wonderful" epidurals and get discouraged. Your sharing of your experience gives me hope. Natural childbirth is not dead! Good for you for caring so much that your baby get the best start with his physical body!

Love, Denise Erskine
